Why Film Photography is Perfect for Busy Moms

Life as a mompreneur is busy — between kids, household responsibilities, and growing your business, carving out time for creativity can feel impossible. That’s exactly why film photography is so special. It allows you to slow down, notice the moments that truly matter, and create images that feel timeless and intentional.

Film photography doesn’t just produce beautiful photos — it helps you romanticize the everyday and appreciate the small details of your child’s life that often go unnoticed.

Step 1: Choose the Right Camera

When starting with film, the first step is picking a camera. Depending on your budget and comfort level, there are a few options:

Point-and-Shoot Cameras (Easy & Accessible):

  • Olympus MJ-2 — Budget-friendly, lightweight, and simple to use.
  • Fujifilm Klasse S — Mid-range option, beautiful results with minimal effort.
  • Contax G2 — Professional-level, perfect for moms serious about photography.

Manual 35mm Cameras (More Control, More Creativity):

  • Canon EOS 3 — My personal favorite, versatile and user-friendly.
  • Canon A-1 — Budget-friendly option, manual focus.
  • Nikon F100 — Mid-tier, allows lens versatility.

For beginners, starting with a point-and-shoot is ideal. Once you’re comfortable, you can explore manual cameras for more creative control.

Step 2: Select Your Film Stock

Film stock determines the look, feel, and ISO of your images. For Dallas moms often shooting indoors or in natural light, I recommend:

  • Color: Kodak Portra 400, Fujifilm 400
  • Black & White: Ilford HP5 (ISO 400), Delta 3200 for low-light or artistic grainy effects

Remember, the goal is to start capturing moments, not to get perfect images immediately. Embrace experimentation and enjoy the process!

Step 3: Learn Basic Film Photography Settings

Even with a beginner camera, understanding the basics helps you get better results:

  • ISO: Determines film sensitivity to light
  • Shutter Speed: Freezes action; aim for 1/125 second or higher for active kids
  • Aperture: Controls depth of field; wider aperture (smaller f-number) creates a creamy, blurred background

If this feels overwhelming, don’t stress. Start simple, and consider using a light meter app to guide your settings.

Step 4: Capture Everyday Moments

Film photography is all about intention. Look for small, meaningful moments:

  • Breakfast with your kids
  • Morning cuddles on the couch
  • Playtime and creative activities
  • Quiet bedtime rituals

Keep your camera accessible and make photographing part of your daily routine. Over time, you’ll develop a rhythm and your images will reflect real, honest moments.

Step 5: Develop, Scan, and Preserve Your Memories

Once you finish a roll of film (usually 36 exposures), it’s time to develop and scan your photos. I recommend:

  • Rewind Film Lab
  • Photo Vision
  • The Find Lab
  • Goodman Film Lab

From there, consider printing and displaying your favorites or creating mini photo albums for each month of your child’s life. This creates a legacy your family can cherish forever.
