What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag: A Newborn Photographer’s Must-Haves

Are you preparing for the arrival of your first baby and feeling completely overwhelmed about what to pack in your hospital bag? I get it—there’s so much advice out there, and it can feel like you need to bring your entire house with you. I remember sobbing on the way to the hospital, unsure of what to expect, terrified of the unknown. If you’re feeling anxious, just know you’re not alone. Take a deep breath, trust your body, and know that when the time comes, you’ve got this.

Now, as a Newborn Photographer in Fort Worth, I’ve worked with so many new moms, and I’ve learned a thing or two about what makes those first few days smoother. Here are my top five hospital bag must-haves—items I promise I’d pack again in a heartbeat:

5 Must-Haves for Your Hospital Bag

  1. Cozy Clothes for the Ride Home
Skip the slippers—most hospitals require you to wear their non-slip socks anyway. Instead, pack a soft, loose-fitting outfit that makes you feel comfortable and put together. Think flowy dresses, joggers, or an oversized sweatshirt.
  2. The “Not-So-Secret” Adult Diapers
I know, I know—not the most glamorous item on the list, but trust me on this one. They’re way better than the mesh underwear and pads the hospital provides, and you’ll be glad you have them.
  3. Witch Hazel Perineal Healing Foam
If you buy one thing from this list, make it this. Frida Mom’s Witch Hazel Healing Foam is an absolute game-changer for postpartum recovery. It soothes, cools, and helps with healing. Grab it on Amazon or Target.
  4. Frida Mom Peri Bottle
The hospital will give you a peri bottle, but let me tell you—the angle on the Frida Mom version makes all the difference. Trust me, it’s worth the upgrade. You can find it on Amazon or Target.
  5. Your Own Pillows & Blanket
Hospital bedding isn’t exactly five-star quality, and if you’re being induced, you could be there for a while. Bring your favorite pillow and blanket (for both you and your partner) to make your stay as comfortable as possible. My personal favorites are linked here.

Every birth experience is unique, and what works for one mama might not work for another. If you have a must-have item you swear by, I’d love to hear it! Send me an email at kayla@kaylamariphotography.com—I’m always looking for great recommendations to share with other new moms!

And when you’re ready to capture those first precious moments with your little one, I’d love to help you document your journey. As a Newborn Photographer in Fort Worth, I specialize in creating heartfelt, timeless images that preserve the beauty of your growing family. Let’s connect!
